Dragon Boat & Outrigger Canoeing

Dragon Boating
OC6 Outrigger Canoe

Dragon boat racing is a traditional Chinese sport that has been around for over 2000 years. A standard dragon boat has 20 paddlers sat in 10 rows, plus a helm and drummer.

We aspire to be competitive and compete in a variety of races and the club has several GB medal winning members. Most competitions are sprint racing. These are usually 200m or 500m. Longer distance races can vary from 2K to 7K.

Outrigger canoes, also known as Va’a, have been around for more than 4,000 years, originating from the islands of Southeast Asia. A six-person canoe, an outrigger has a supporting float, known as an Ama, attached to one side of the boat for stability.

Outrigging is a hugely popular sport in places such as Tahiti and Hawaii and is gaining momentum here in the UK and around the world.

We compete in a variety of events, usually on rivers and lakes, and have recently started expanding our activities onto the sea — giving us the opportunity to enjoy a whole new side of the sport.

O1

The O1 is a single-seat outrigger canoe, similar to an enclosed kayak, fitted with an ama (outrigger float) and a rudder that is controlled with your feet. We provide training and support for paddlers looking to develop their O1 skills.

As O1s are commonly used for time trials and performance assessments, they are an excellent way to progress your paddling and develop skills that transfer to dragon boat racing. The club currently has around nine O1s available for members.
