The Vogalonga 2013
Every year, there is a pageant in Venice to raise awareness of the City, the island and the lagoon. The Hurricanes decided to take a team in 2013. It was a great way to bond with the team and to visit somewhere exceptional. We flew out together and stayed in different apartments near each other. The first night entailed getting to know the city and for those of us who hadn’t gone before, getting used to sharp drop into the Grand Canal right at the end of the passageway at the end of our apartment.
Saturday was a day for sightseeing and a trip to Murano to watch the glass blowing. It was warm enough for t-shirt and shorts and a walk back to the apartments from St Mark’s square proved that it was very easy to get lost in the back streets of the city. A meal out together was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
The next day saw the Hurricanes taking part in the breathtaking pageant. Even the rain couldn’t dampen our spirits; it is water sport after all!
Following the 3 hour paddle, with a couple of comfort breaks and a near miss or two, a well earned drink was the order of the day. A friendly restaurant owner provided the entertainment and filled with pizza, then some of us headed home on the last flight out.
