Challenges Article

Our paddlers are always up for a challenge and as well as racing in National League events, we participate in distance paddles, overseas events, Racing for Great Britain and charity fund raising paddling events.

The Great River Race

Held in September every year, the Great River Race sees hundreds of man powered craft take to the Thames. The Hurricanes regularly enter a team, with some of our member having competed several times. It’s a 20 mile race known as The River marathon and is not for the feint hearted!

Loch Ness

In 2011, The Hurricanes embarked onthe long distance paddle of a lifetime and paddled the length of Scotland’s most famous body of water. Sadly there were no Nessie sightings! Click here for the full story.

The Vogalonga

Who would have thought that the first time some of us went to the romantic City of Venice would be to complete a 26 km pageant and actually get to paddle down the Grand Canal? Click here to find out how it went.

  • The Needles
  • Having trained for months to paddle the open sea between Portsmouth and the Needles on the Isle of White and putting many man hours into organising it, we were unfortunately unable to complete this challenge due to inclement weather. Every cloud has a silver lining however, and we were able to still present the RNLI Lymington with our fundraising cheque for £7000.
